Pete Wakefield is an operational Watch Commander with over 2 decades experience in the UK Fire and Rescue Service and the founder and host of The Firefighters Podcast.
An instructor across multiple operational disciplines, including fire behaviour, road traffic collision extrication and tactical ventilation, Pete is passionate about improving firefighter safety through science-led training, practical skill development and accessible professional learning.
Since launching in 2020, The Firefighters Podcast has grown into a global fire and rescue media and education platform, producing more than 500 episodes and close to one million verified long-form views and downloads.
Pete is regularly invited to speak, host and record at major UK and international fire-sector events, covering leadership, culture, operational readiness, fire behaviour and professional development.
In December 2025, Pete and The Firefighters Podcast received the Unsung Hero Award at the Excellence in Fire Awards in London for outstanding contribution to the UK fire sector.
He is also a multiple-medal-winning international firefighter challenge competitor and leads the UK Pink Firefighters initiative.
His philosophy is simple: we are temporary custodians of the fire service, with a responsibility to leave it better than we found it.
